Nya:weh (thank-you) and welcome to Getting Healthy with Iroquois Social Songs (for lack of a better title).
These podcasts are inspired by Robert Ullrey’s “Podcasts for Running”, that uses the “Couch to 5k” in 9 weeks program from the Cool Running’s website. Mr Ullrey’s podcasts used dance genre music with the timed intervals. Since I am involved with Ohwejagehka Hadegaenage, a non-profit organization that helps preserve Iroquoian music and language, I thought why not combine these two interests. So these podcasts, use Iroquoian Social Songs with the timed spoken instructions when to jog or walk.
There is more information on the “Couch to 5k” program at coolrunning.com.
The program is designed for the beginner or non-active person to be able to jog/run for 30 minutes straight or approximately a 5k distance. The early weeks start with more walking than jogging, but each week the jogging times increase in gradually and manageable increments. The routine is designed to be done three times per week with a rest day in between each session. It’s okay to stay on any certain week until you feel you are ready to proceed to the next week. Please remember to pay attention to your body and stop before anything turns into something serious. The most important thing is to stay active! Don’t get discouraged! Ask someone to start the program with you. Good luck!
Feedback is appreciated. If you run your first 5k, please post to let other’s know.
If it has been some time since you have undertaken physical activity, please be sure to consult a doctor to ensure it is safe for you to proceed with this activity.
